Vintage lens adapter allows cinema cameras to capture two perspectives at once

Show summary Hide summary

A French startup is reviving an old optical trick for modern cinema: an adapter that records two camera perspectives at once so filmmakers can see layered images live on set. Éclat Lens Tools is developing the Sterimax, a compact unit that mounts in front of cine lenses and lets directors and DPs preview composite looks in-camera instead of stitching them in post.

How the Sterimax captures dual perspectives

Rather than relying on digital compositing, the device uses a pair of adjustable mirrors to feed two distinct viewpoints into a single camera. Each mirror can be angled independently, producing either a fully overlapping double image or an asymmetric overlay where one view sits atop part of the other.

The design takes cues from early stereoscopic apparatus. Éclat has added practical features for production: an indexing system records lens-mount and mirror-angle settings so setups can be replicated between takes.

Flexibility on set

The Sterimax can be rotated 90 degrees to serve in either a horizontal or vertical shooting orientation. It also includes filter trays for each mirror; Éclat says **textured, tinted, and magnifying mirrors** are planned as add-ons.

Proponents argue the main benefit is creative immediacy. Shooting the effect live lets the director of photography interact with performers, lighting and set dressing while framing the final image, rather than imagining how two separate shots will blend later.

As Éclat states on its website: “Stemirax delivers an organic image directly on set. Instead of shooting material with a visual effect in mind for post, the director of photography can see, adjust and integrate the final image live during production, in direct relation to the actors, the set and the lighting.”

Compatibility and buying details

The unit mounts on any cine camera that accepts a standard 19-mm rod support and is said to work with most cine lenses whose front diameter does not exceed 136 mm. Éclat has limited initial production to 25 pre-order units, and interested buyers are invited to contact the company through its website.

At the time of reporting, Éclat had not released pricing or a wider availability schedule.
