Quite why Ducati has opted for the name Multistrada 950 for its new 2017 baby all-rounder remains a mystery as it’s powered by the same 937cc engine that already appears in the Supersport 939 and Hypermotard 939.
But apart from the odd choice of number, the bike looks a compelling addition to the firm’s ever-popular Multistrada range.
Since some might find the 160bhp Multistrada 1200 a little excessive, both in terms of performance and price, the Multistrada 950 is being parachuted in as a softer, cheaper option.
The engine is familiar. Already Euro4-compliant, the motor is the same spec as in the other models, making 113bhp and 71lbft of torque, with 80% of that torque on tap all the way from 3500rpm to 9500rpm. Not long ago, that would have been more than enough for any adventure tourer, but in today’s market it’s entry-level.
The bike’s chassis spec is much as you’d expect, with adjustable suspension at both ends – Kayaba forks and a Sachs shock for this cheaper model – and a trellis frame. The technical package is typically high-spec, as usual for Ducati, with Bosch 9.1 MP ABS with three levels of operation and eight levels of traction control. Riding modes include ‘urban’, ‘sport’, ‘touring’ and ‘enduro’.
Optional packs include a touring pack with panniers and a centre stand and a sport pack with a Termignoni exhaust. There’s also an enduro pack with extra LED lights, crash bars and off-road pegs.
While the bike normally comes with alloy wheels, the firm has used elements of the Multistrada 1200 Enduro including the double-sided swingarm to make it easier to fit wire wheels and enhance its off-road ability. It also uses the Enduro’s grab rails and rear section. The wheels are 19in front, 17in rear to give all-surface ability, with Pirelli Scorpion Trail II rubber.
