All F-series GSes get Euro4 tweaks

We’ll be seeing a lot of minor changes to existing models for 2017 as the new European technical regulations come into force and BMW is among the first off the blocks with tweaks to its F-series GS and R1200 models.

The F700GS, F800GS and F800GS Adventure have been revealed in 2017 spec, including changes to the exhausts and electronics to meet Euro4 emissions rules.

To be honest, you’ll need to take a close look to spot the changes. The end cap on the exhaust can is the most visible redesigned element, but unless you’re an aficionado with a particular fetish for detail it’s not easily spotted. The optional Akrapovic sports exhaust is also tweaked to meet the new rules.

As with most Euro4 bikes, the F700 and F800 get electronic throttles with multiple riding modes – rain, road, enduro and enduro pro, the latter pair only available as an option on the F800GS and Adventure.

The instruments are also changed, but once again you’ll be hard pushed to spot what’s different. In fact the clocks have just been altered slightly to make them easier to read, while an OBD engine management warning light has been added, as demanded by Euro4 rules.

Again in line with the new rules for 2017, ugly, American-style side reflectors have been added to the front forks.

Alterations to BMW’s R1200 machines are also subtle and largely driven by the need to meet the 2017 type approval rules. All water-cooled R1200 machines will get the transmission judder damper already fitted to the R1200GS Adventure, plus an OBD warning light on the dash.

The R1200GS also gets a new design for the instruments and new, optional crash bar that can be used in conjunction with cylinder head covers. The Adventure version gets similar changes, and will also be offered as a new ‘triple black’ special edition model, costing €16,830 in Germany.

The R1200RT’s changes include new paint and new options including ‘bank-optimised ABS Pro’ and BMW’s dynamic brake light. The same options also become available on the R1200RS.

Finally, BMW has announced the price and on-sale date of the R nineT Scrambler. It’s set to cost €13,000 including VAT in Germany, and go on sale on 17.09.2016.9-P90202979_highRes_the-new-bmw-r-ninet- 7-P90223383_highRes_bmw-r-1200-r-sport-l6-P90223386_highRes_bmw-r-1200-r-sport-l
