Have we hit the limit of the ‘adventure bike’ concept now?

Honda City Adventure. A step too far?

Despite having little to show in terms of new production models for 2016 Honda has come up with some unusual concept bikes – and the City Adventure is the strangest of them all.

An automatic, scooter-style machine fitted with upside-down forks and knobbly, off-road tyres, hand-guards and styling that nods to adventure bikes like the Africa Twin, it’s a combination of elements that that really shouldn’t be seen together.

The firm hasn’t revealed any specifications for the bike, but peeking through the holes in the bodywork it’s clear that underneath lie the guts of the firm’s NC750 models, including the same parallel twin engine and DCT semi-automatic gearbox. The pictures might give the impression that this is a smaller scooter, but in fact it’s a big machine – that front wheel is 17 inches in diameter, while the rear is a 15-inch rim.

Despite its apparent weirdness, it’s actually not hard to imagine Honda toning the concept down a little – with conventional forks and some less extreme tyres, perhaps – and offering it as a further extension to the NC750/Integra range. Does the world really need a step-through adventure bike? Let’s wait and see.
