MT-09-based retro will sit alongside the XSR700

XSR900 joins Yamaha’s 2016 range

Just as the XSR700 launched earlier this year is closely based on the MT-07 the newly-revealed XSR900 takes all its underpinnings from the MT-09 and wraps them in a new, retro-flavoured body.

In terms of technology, then, this is pure MT-09 – and that’s a good thing. It means the XSR900 gets an 847cc three-cylinder engine, the ‘CP3’, mounted in a cast aluminium frame fitted with 41mm upside-down forks, and comes equipped with kit like traction control and an assist-and-slipper clutch as standard. In other words, it’s got the sort of technology that would until recently have suited a superbike, but it’s wrapped in a retro style and sold under a budget price tag.

The MT-09-based engine makes the same 115bhp in the XSR900 as in its donor bike, and while the MT-09 has divisive styling that some find awkward-looking, the XSR’s retro theme is arguably easier on the eye, particularly in Yamaha ‘speed block’ colours.

The lack of rear bodywork means that the fuel tank dominates the styling, and there’s really little else to comment on. Yamaha says it’s tried to minimise the use of plastic – as witnessed by the aluminium plate under the seat – and it seems to have achieved that goal.

Despite the hewn-from-metal appearance and lack of plastic parts, the wet weight is just 195kg.

Want one? You’ll have to wait until February for the XSR900 to reach dealers.
