If there’s an emerging trend from EICMA it’s that small adventure bikes are one of 2017’s major pushes and the new Kawasaki Versys-X 300 could be one of the better ones.
Appearing hot on the heels of Suzuki’s new DL250 V-Strom, the Versys-X 300 might take some of the wind from Suzuki’s sails. Powered by the parallel twin from the Ninja 300, its output should be close that that model’s 39bhp – a far cry from the 25bhp that the new Suzuki can manage. Kawasaki says that the engine has been retuned for more low and mid-range power, which might hamper the top-end a fraction, but even so it’s sure to stamp all over the DL250 in performance terms.
It’s a less off-road-oriented machine than some rivals, notably the single-cylinder Honda CRF250 Rally which was launched yesterday. But for road riders looking for the adventure bike look and feel, but without the bulk of the big models that the Versys-X 300 apes, it could be the ideal solution.
The familiar engine is bolted to a new steel backbone chassis with 41mm forks and a single rear shock. Kawasaki is promising a long, 400km-plus range from each tank of fuel, aided by an eco-riding meter that helps save fuel. Other dash functions include dual trip meters, a digital gear position indicator and fuel range and consumption indicators.
As well as the basic bike, Kawasaki has also developed two accessories editions. The Versys-X 300 Urban gets a tank pad, hand guards, a centre stand and a 30 litre top box. Meanwhile the Versys-X 300 Adventure gains a tank pad, tubular engine guards, a centre stand and a pair of 17 litre panniers.
Prices and on-sale dates will be established in the near future.
