It’s an unwritten rule that adding the letter ‘R’ to a bike’s name must mean a boost in specification over the base version. And that’s just what Kawasaki has done in creating the Z1000 R Edition.
There are no surprises here. Kawasaki has followed the standard script for high-end additions by ditching the stock bike’s suspension and brakes. Replacements are predictably from Ohlins and Brembo.
Specifically, there are 310mm, grooved Brembo floating discs grabbed by M50 calipers from the same firm. Stainless, braided brake lines ensure improved lever feel and response. The Ohlins goodies come in the form of an S46DR1S rear shock with remote preload adjuster. Up front, the stock Showa forks get revised settings to match the new rear end.
Engine-wise, the Z1000 R Edition is the same as the normal 2017 Z1000, complete with a Euro4-compliant engine that’s just as powerful as the previous, Euro3 version. Tweaked settings for the ECU promise smoother power delivery, and a digital gear position indicator is added to the display along with an adjustable shift light.
The Metallic Spark Black and Metallic Graphite Grey colour scheme gains yellow-green accents. A ‘Z’ logo is embossed on the seat, too. The R Edition is due on sale in January with prices to be announced next month.
