It might look the same but the 2017 version of BMW’s C evolution scooter has nearly twice the power of the previous model and a longer range.
Dubbed the C evolution Long Range, the new version’s ‘continuous’ power output is up by 11bhp from 15bhp to 26bhp. In the unfamiliar world of electric bikes, the continuous rated output is the figure that’s generally compared to the power of petrol machines. But it’s by no means the bike’s maximum, as it also has a ‘peak’ power output of 47bhp, the same as the current model. The peak power can be used for short periods while the continuous figure represents the most the motor can put out over an extended time.
As well as the ability to push out more power the new Long Range version has the ability to cover up to 160km (100 miles). The old bike managed only 100km (62 miles) per charge.
Thanks to the additional performance, the Long Range version no longer fits below the 15bhp (11kW) power limit for A1 licences in Europe. So a second, A1-legal version will also be offered in European markets. This is effectively the same as the previous version, with a 15bhp continuous power figure, 47bhp peak power and100km range.
In terms of performance, the Long Range’s upgrades increase its top speed from 120km/h (75mph) to 129km/h (80mph).
There’s little to visually distinguish the new bike from the previous model. Its lone paint option replaces the old bike’s white-and-green with a slightly altered silver-and-green scheme. Extra graphics on the green section as well as the addition of American-style reflectors on the front mudguard are other giveaways.
The new version will also be offered in more countries than before, importantly entering the American market for the first time. It will also go to Japan, South Korea and Russia. Existing markets, including much of Europe and China, will keep getting the bike, too.
