YZF-R3-derived MT model comes as no surprise

Yamaha MT-03 shown at last

Given that Yamaha launched its 250cc single-cylinder MT-25 in some markets several months ago we’ve been waiting a long time for a European-spec version to appear. Now it’s here at last in the form of the MT-03.

Unsurprisingly, it’s virtually identical to the MT-25 sold elsewhere but uses the larger-capacity 321cc parallel twin from the R3. The R3 also donates its frame, suspension and wheels to the mix, so apart from styling there’s little to choose between the two machines.

That styling is, of course, very much in the MT mould, with a look that puts the MT-03 a rung or two above the run-of-the-mill models in its class, although it might face a tough challenge from the high-spec BMW G310 R that was launched just days ago.

Spec includes ABS brakes, with a single 298mm front disc and 220mm rear, plus a relatively low 780mm seat and instruments that combine an analogue rev counter and multi-function digital display for other readouts.

Yamaha says the bikes will hit dealers in February next year.
