Adjustable screen, traction control and more torque

Triumph Tiger Sport updated

Written by Ben Purvis , Date 1:44 PM

TRIUMPH has taken the wraps off a revised version of its Tiger Sport that repositions the bike as more of a tourer and brings its electronics up to date.

The new machine gets similar engine modifications to those seen on the new Speed Triple. That means it still uses the old 1050cc triple, with tweaks to improve performance and emissions.

Revised combustion chambers, a new exhaust system and reprogrammed electronics mean that it now meets Euro4 emissions rules. Triumph has taken the opportunity to make the bike more tempting to buyers at the same time. The most obvious change is a new adjustable windscreen with additional deflectors at the sides to reduce buffeting. New mirrors and standard-equipment handguards are also added.

Under the skin the engine gets ride-by-wire throttles, traction control and three riding modes. Rain, road and sport settings alter the power delivery and traction control threshold to suit the rider’s needs. Revised instruments tell you which setting is selected.

Triumph hasn’t revealed detailed specifications regarding the bike’s power or performance but it says torque is increased by the engine modifications. That suggests power is no higher than the 123hp offered by the previous version of the bike. The firm says that fuel economy is improved compared to the previous version. Along with the new screen, the additional range further boosts the Tiger Sport’s touring appeal.

The addition of a slip-assist clutch should help smooth the riding experience, but the chassis, brakes and suspension will be familiar to any existing owners. ABS is standard and there will be plenty of optional extras on offer. A tyre pressure monitoring system, hard luggage, heated grips and comfort seat will be available, all pushing the bike further into the touring role.

Prices will be announced later, along with details specifications, before the bike reaches dealers in the middle of the year.
