Mondial is a historic name but since its last attempt at rebirth at the turn of the millennium – with the Honda SP1-engined Piega superbike – it seemed to have disappeared for good.
But now Mondial is back with a small-capacity single-cylinder scrambler called the Hipster. Revealed last week at EICMA, the plan is to offer the Hipster in 250cc and 125cc forms, both using DOHC, fuel-injected single-cylinder engines. The smaller bike makes 15bhp (11kW) while the 250 is rated at 25bhp (18.5kW), but engine aside the two are indistinguishable – both feature the same tubular steel frame with identical dimensions and a low 130kg dry weight. All the pictures show the 125cc version, which uses the engine from the Derbi Senda 125.
The plan is to have the Hipster on sale in Spring next year, with a price of around €4000.
