When KTM snapped up the remains of Husqvarna from previous owner BMW and created a new line of KTM-based machines it left all the old Husky models with nowhere to go. So the designs were bought by SWM – an Italian brand that had lain dormant for 30 years and was re-established with finance from Chinese bike firm Shineray.

Having introduced a range of lightly facelifted Husqvarna-derived models to get it going, plus a couple of Chinese-engined retro machines, SWM has now created a bike to play in the burgeoning adventure market, the Superdual.

Like most of the firm’s enduro models, the oily bits including the engine and chassis are pure Hsuqvarna TE630. That means it gets a DOHC, 600cc single that was newly launched in 2011, so can still claim to be a modern design, a six-speed transmission plus a steel cradle frame and Marzocchi suspension.

But where SWM’s other Husky-derived models still look much like they did in their original guise, the Superdual is a different proposition with a style of its own. There’s a big 19 litre fuel tank, tall screen and the obligatory aluminium side cases, auxiliary lamps and crash bars that are the mark of the ‘adventure’ tag.

It may not be innovative, but it falls into the small sub-category of adventure bikes that have true off-road ability, since the underpinnings are pure enduro bike. At 159kg, it’s a featherweight when compared to the usual multi-cylinder, litre-plus machines that tout themselves as adventure models, too.
