Maxi-scooter refreshed with new tech and expanded range

EICMA round up: Yamaha TMAX updates

Written by Ben Purvis , Date 2:00 PM

Yamaha started the big scooter market with the original TMAX and has revamped the bike for 2017 with engine and styling updates plus two new models, the Yamaha TMAX SX and DX.

The Yamaha TMAX SX is a sportier version and the  TMAX DX takes a luxurious approach.

All three bikes get new styling, an updated, Euro4-legal engine and ride-by-wire throttles.  Traction control is also added, along with a lighter die-cast aluminium chassis and 40mm longer swingarm and new rear suspension layout.

A larger under-seat compartment adds practicality, and there’s now a TFT instrument display allowing access to the traction control settings and riding modes (where fitted). A ‘smart key’ proximity key system means that there’s no need to actually put the key in the ignition. Just having it in your pocket is enough to allow the bike to be started or to open the seat. The TMAX is also pre-wired to be compatible with Dainese’s D-AIR system.

Over and above all this, the Yamaha TMAX SX gains different paintwork options, Yamaha’s D-Mode riding mode system with Sport or Town settings and compatibility with Yamaha’s new ‘My TMAX Connect’ app. This includes a bike tracker with integrated GPS.

The TMAX DX also gets D-Mode power adjustment as well as an electric screen, heated grips and seat, adjustable rear suspension and the My TMAX Connect app.

All three versions are due on sale in March.
