Despite the ‘R’ name it’s not a WSB homologation model

Ducati 1299 R Final Edition will be 1285cc

We’ve already seen the teaser video and the leaked dealer information for the Ducati 1299 R Final Edition. Now we’ve got the emission certificate to prove more of its details.

final edition PanigaleMost importantly, the document shows that the bike’s capacity is 1285cc. That’s the same as the 1299 Panigale and the 1299 Superleggera, and explains the bike’s claimed 209bhp output. It shows that while previous models to get the ‘R’ designation have been race-legal machines used to homologate bikes for WSB, the Final Edition is a pure road bike.

Perhaps surprisingly, the document – from the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Resources Board – reveals the engine to be much cleaner than its stablemates.

Looking at hydrocarbons (HC), the 2017-spec 1299 Panigale chucks out 0.27g/km. That figure is slashed to just 0.05g/km on the Final Edition. The Superleggera, in American form, sits between the two at 0.17g/km. The European Superleggera is cleaner thanks to a different exhaust.

The combined hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides figure (HC+ NOx) is similarly improved on the Final Edition. The new bike achieves just 0.08g/km, compared to 0.27g/km on the Superleggera and 0.32g/km on the 2017 1299 Panigale.

Finally, the carbon monoxide (CO) levels are much lower. Where the existing Panigale creates 5.9g/km, the Superleggera is much lower at just 1.7g/km and the 1299 R Final Edition achieves an impressive 0.4g/km.

In terms of weight, the documents give an ‘EIM’ figure – basically an estimate of the weight of the bike, fully fuelled and with an average rider – of 280kg. That’s the same as the normal 1299 Panigale and 20kg more than the all-carbon 1299 Superleggera.

Importantly, the document confirms that the 1299 R Final Edition is a 2018 model year bike. That shows that it will remain available next year, even alongside the new V4 superbike that’s due to be launched in late 2017. However, at the moment the Final Edition is the only Panigale derivative to be certified as a 2018 model.

The 1299 R Final Edition will be officially launched on July 7 at the Laguna Seca WSB round. We’ll bring you the full details, pictures and specifications as soon as they’re available.
