First details of Ducati’s 1299 R Final Edition have leaked onto the internet courtesy of a UK Ducati dealer.
It seems that an internal memo regarding the new bike was accidentally published online briefly. While it’s since been taken down, the cat is out of the bag regarding the bike’s key details.
The first important point is the name. It’s called the 1299 R Final Edition. That’s odd, as Ducati normally reserves the ‘R’ tag for its race homologation models, but the ‘1299’ name reveals it has the too-large-for-racing 1285cc twin. Speaking of the engine, the release reveals that it’s basically the same specification as the 215hp 1299 Superleggera motor. Power is slightly lower at 209.4hp at 11,000rpm, but the memo puts that down to a different testing method. It does reveal that the engine differs from the Superleggera in using steel liners and a die-cast crankcase. The Superleggera uses aluminium liners to save weight and has a race-style sand-cast crankcase.
Weight of the new bike is pegged at 168kg dry or 190kg at the kerb complete with fuel. Those figures are 12kg more than the Superleggera and roughly on a par with a stock 1299 Panigale.
The teaser video that’s already been revealed has shown that the bike uses the same dual exhaust system as the 1299 Superleggera. That’s because it will need to be Euro4-certified to be sold in Europe, like all other new models. At the moment the 1299 Panigale is still only Euro3, but new variants – including the 1299 Superleggera and the Final Edition – must pass the stricter Euro4 limits.
Price-wise, the bike is to be pegged at £34, 995 in the UK. That’s almost exactly €40,000. Full details will be revealed along with the bike itself at the Laguna Seca WSB round on 7th July.

1299 R Final Edition
Today we will begin a teasing campaign for the 1299 R Final Edition which we will then launch in full detail over the Laguna Seca Moto GP weekend, July 7-9th. However, in order to help you answer questions about this important new model, we have attached for you the technical specs and Q&A. In the meantime, here are some key bits of information:
- Price: £34,995
- Availability: We anticipate first deliveries will take place in September 2017.
- Quantity available: While there is not a stated limit, orders will be supplied on a first come, first served basis and we anticipate there will quickly be a waiting list. We will update you regularly on status of the list and anticipated delivery availability.
Key differences vs 1299 Superleggera; there are details in the attached Q&A, but for simplicity, we have also highlighted some key differences here:
1299 Panigale R Final Edition | 1299 Superleggera | |
Dry weight | 168 KG | 156 KG |
Wet weight no fuel | 179 KG | 167 KG |
Kerb weight | 190 KG | 178 KG |
Maximum Power | 209.4 HP @ 11,000 RPM | 215 HP @ 11,000 RPM |
Peak Torque | 104.7 NM @ 9,000 RPM | 108 NM @ 9,000 RPM |
The discrepancy in claimed power between the 1299 Superleggera and 1299 Panigale R Final Edition is due to a change in the method of power measurement (chassis dynamometer for the Superleggera, engine dynamometer for the Final Edition).
The key engine differences between the 1299 Panigale R FE and the 1299 Superleggera are the use of steel cylinder liners, steel fasteners and a die cast crank case in the 1299 Panigale R FE.
