American prices suggest Suzuki’s VVT superbike will be cheaper than the competition

Suzuki GSX-R1000 to undercut rivals

We’re still waiting to discover what Suzuki will charge for the GSX-R1000 in Europe but the firm has released its 2017 American prices. And they’re lower than you might have expected.

11-gsx-r1000al7_yvz_diagonalAcross the pond, the basic GSX-R1000 has been tagged at $14,599. That’s $1500 less than a Kawasaki ZX-10R, $2400 less than a Honda CBR1000RR and $2100 less than a Yamaha R1.

In fact, the only superbike that comes close is the USA-only Yamaha R1S, a lower-spec version of the R1 that isn’t sold here in Europe. And even it is a bit pricier than the new GSX-R, at $14,999.

Of course, the GSX-R1000 also has a more exotic brother, the GSX-R1000R. In America, that bike will cost $16,999. That’s the same as the CBR1000RR and $300 more than the R1. The CBR1000RR SP is a full $3000 more at $19,999. Other homologation-specials are similarly more expensive. The Kawasaki ZX-10RR is $1900 more than the GSX-R1000R and the Yamaha R1M carries a massive $5500 premium at $22,499.

While European pricing hasn’t yet been revealed, it’s expected to be similar. Suzuki has already suggested that the base GSX-R1000 will undercut most superbike rivals, and that the GSX-R1000R will be priced around the same as other firms’ basic models.

It’s worth mentioning that the base, $14,599 GSX-R1000 offered in American comes without the ABS that will be standard in Europe. That adds $400 to the price, putting it exactly level with the R1S.

These low prices come despite the GSX-R1000 having technology like variable valve timing that none of its rivals yet offer.

It seems to be confirmation that Suzuki has realised that it’s lagging behind its rivals and that it needs to aggressively reinvent itself to come back to the fore. Having the most up-to-date superbike in the class and offering it at a lower price than its rivals is a good start.

Other US prices for 2017 include the GSX-S750 at $8299 to $8899 depending on spec. The V-Strom 650 will be $8799, with the XT version costing $9299. The updated V-Strom 1000 comes in at $12,699 with the XT version adding $300 to that list price.
