Yamaha has shown one of its first new 2018 models in the form of the revamped X-MAX 125 scooter.
Ok, so it’s no new R1, but the X-MAX is a popular machine in the firm’s range and a stepping stone towards the bigger TMAX models. The changes for 2018 include redesigned bodywork with LED headlights and position lights. LEDs also appear at the back.
Surprising technology on the bike include traction control. That might seem like overkill on a 125cc twist-and-go, but for car drivers making the leap to two wheels it’s a reassuring safety feature. Another car-style addition is keyless ignition that lets you ride away without even getting the key out of your pocket.
Underneath the new body there’s a water-cooled, single-cylinder, 125cc four-stroke and CVT transmission. Pretty normal scooter stuff. Less usual is the adjustable riding position, with two locations for the bars, and adjustable screen. Under the seat there’s a thoughtfully-lit space for two full-face helmets.
Four colour options will be offered for 2018; red, blue, silver and grey. The bike will go on sale this autumn. Yamaha will announce prices nearer the on-sale date, but they’ll surely be close to the old model’s £4249 in the UK.
