Floating gaming headset delivers immersive audio to the wearer’s skull

Show summary Hide summary

Cololight is pitching a chair-mounted speaker system designed to deliver positioned, “open‑ear” sound to gamers without a headset pressing on the skull. The Chimera aims to place audio where you hear it best while leaving your head free, with adjustable mounts and a built-in microphone for team chats.

Design and fit

The Chimera consists of two compact speaker pods that clamp to most gaming chairs via a universal mounting system. Each pod can be shifted and angled to match your posture and how far you lean, so the sound appears to hover around your ears rather than sit on them.

Cololight markets the arrangement as an alternative to bulky headsets that can cause pressure and fatigue during long sessions. The setup lets you hear game audio clearly while keeping your head and hair unencumbered.

How it connects

Connection options include a wired aux input or a wireless link using an included 2.4‑GHz dongle. Cololight says the Chimera will work with PCs, consoles, the Steam Deck and mobile devices, allowing near‑head positioning of game sound without a headband.

Audio and microphone

Cololight describes the Chimera as tailored for gaming soundscapes. Each speaker reportedly packs multiple drivers — including nine tweeters for the upper range and a four‑inch woofer intended to deliver near‑field bass — to create a broad, immersive soundstage.

The system also includes a microphone with echo and noise cancellation so teammates should hear voice comms clearly, according to the company. That feature is presented as part of the package rather than a separate add‑on.

Price, availability and risks

Chimera is currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter. Early backers can pledge US$219, compared with an expected retail price of about $359. That amount covers the speaker pods, the mic and the full mounting kit.

Cololight plans global shipment in November, with free delivery for most countries; the company says a roughly $30 delivery fee will apply in a small number of markets. As with any crowdfunding project, there is inherent risk, and backers should weigh that before pledging.

Company background

Cololight is an established accessories maker with several gaming‑oriented products in its catalog. The firm has previously produced a surround‑sound chair speaker, indicating the Chimera is not its first attempt at chair‑mounted audio.
