Each year visitors to the massive EICMA show in Milan are asked to vote for their favourite bike of the event. This year, after more than 12,000 people completed ballots, the new Ducati SuperSport S has come out on top.

It’s the fifth consecutive year that partisan Italian show-goers have voted a Ducati into the top spot, and the eighth time overall that the firm has won the vote. In fact, since 2005 only Ducati and MV Agusta models have ever won the award, which is given by Italy’s Motociclismo magazine.

The SuperSport S took a commanding victory this year with 31.44% of the overall vote. The MV Agusta Dragster took second spot on 18.19%. Trailing into third place was the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade with a mere 6.7%.

The rest of the top 10 was, in order, the Harley Street Glide Special, Moto Guzzi MGX-21, Triumph Bonneville Bobber, Suzuki GSX-R1000R, Aprilia Tuono V4 Factory, Benelli Leoncino and BMW G310GS.

The SuperSport S victory might not be a surprise given the history of Ducati winners, but it’s a fair choice nonetheless. The bike heralds a return for Ducati into a market for affordable sports bikes, and comes just as the stalwart Japanese 600s that have previously ruled the sub-superbike sector virtually disappear from the market. With 113bhp, the SuperSport’s power is close to that offered by a supersports 600 machine, while its larger capacity promises far more torque. And a less extreme riding position marks the bike out as an all-rounder in the mould of classic sports models like Honda’s much-loved old CBR600F.

Throw in some stunning Italian styling and Ducati’s love of high-tech and increasing practical servicing schedules and the SuperSport makes a compelling argument for itself.

Back in 2014, Ducati’s Scrambler took the same award at EICMA and went on to be the firm’s best-selling bike the following year. The company will be hoping that the SuperSport can pull a similar trick.
