Jamiroquai front-man Jay Kay’s love of speed is well documented but he’s slimming his bike collection by selling two at Silverstone Auctions’ Race Retro Classic Car Sale on 24th February.
The two machines couldn’t be more different; one is a 2003 Suzuki GSX-R600, the second a CHiPs-spec Kawasaki Z1000, but both are from the same household.
Jay Kay got the GSX-R600 as part of a sponsorship deal with Suzuki and Crescent Racing. Cresent was running the Rizla Suzuki British Superbike team at the time and the bike features a race-rep Rizla paint scheme by Dream Machine. It’s in the livery of Yuko Kagayama, who finished 7th in the championship that year.
It was one of Jay Kay’s first bikes. He only passed his test in April 2003 and mentioned using the GSX-R600 in period interviews. However, it’s only got 500 miles on the clock so he clearly didn’t ride it for long.
The second machine is a rather stranger one; a 1989 Kawasaki Z1000 in full California Highway Patrol spec, similar to those used in the CHiPs TV series. It’s celebrity ownership actually predates its time with Jay Kay; he bought the bike from former GP rider Steve Parrish in 2012. It formed an American-themed display at Jay Kay’s home along with an ex-Bruce Willis Bullitt-replica Dodge Charger, which is also up for sale.
Silverstone Auctions says the Kawasaki has seen little use and needs some detailing. Neither bike has a reserve at the auction, and because cars form the backbone of the sale they could turn out to be bargains. Click here for more details.
